A Review of Irreversible Anonymization Techniques
The irreversibility of anonymized images means that they cannot be returned to a state in which an individual can be identified after anonymization. The purpose of irreversible anonymization is to reduce the risk of personal information breaches at the fundamental level.
It has become essential to anonymize specific parts such as faces to prevent identification and potential misuse of personal data. This is where techniques such as blur, mosaic, replace, and encryption are used.

INFINIQ offers blur and replace techniques to protect personal privacy. Blurring technique uses a Gaussian function to set the sigma value to make the face indistinguishable. The higher the sigma value, the stronger the blur effect on the face. According to experiments conducted by the Korea Electronics Technology Institute (KETI), setting the sigma value for blurring to 15 or more makes it impossible to detect or recognize faces, providing complete protection of personal information.
The replace method is a technique that detects the face area of the target and replaces it with an AI-generated face. The most significant advantage of blur and replace techniques is that they are irreversible so that it provides fundamental protection for personal information.
On the other side, the mosaic method can be reversible using deep learning technology such as 'Super Resolution' as the method replaces the brightness of a given block size with the average value of pixels to prevent identification of faces.
